2018 Spring Painting Exhibition

8401 Center Parkway, Sacramento

Opening Reception - February 24, 2018 from 6 to 8pm
Exhibit February 24 through March 23

The 2018 Spring Painting Exhibition will feature three painters, including six signature Joe Rice paintings from the late sixties and early seventies. This will be, in a sense, a public debut for Rice, who, during his lifetime, had no interest in showing or selling his work. To my knowledge, none of these six paintings have been on previous public display. Don't miss this rare opportunity!

The six paintings on display are examples of Rice's unique blend of hard-edge and representational elements with a surrealistic twist. Some of the paintings are reminiscent of Diego Rivera's stylized portraits, others possess the whimsy of a Magritte--both artists were among those Rice much admired and emulated. The six were painted during the period when he was studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. Motifs include disconnected telephone receivers and pipes, and full-figured, faceless women. The woman depicted in the painting below was his favorite model.

One of the other two artists featured is LeeAnn Brook, of Nevada City. Find examples of her work on her website, here. I will provide information on the third artist as soon as it's available.

    The Green Man
    Joe Rice remembered

Rice was a little-known artist. By choice.
The Green Man is a self-portrait  from the 1960s. It's a pretty good likeness. Rice was an artist first, a father, teacher and whatever else, after that. He was also inventive, dogged, abidingly humble, and, in his own quiet way, an inspiration to those who knew him.

    Dorothy Rice writes things
. Her first book, The Reluctant Artist: Joe Rice (1918-2011) is an art book/memoir about her father, Joe Rice, whose lifelong dedication to his art, with no interest in finding an audience, both inspires and mystifies. Visit her author website here.
