Inspirational Encounters - February 24 to March 23, 2018

3/1/2018

This past Saturday was the opening reception for a debut exhibit of six signature Joe Rice paintings, all representative of what was arguably his most distinctive period, the sixties and early seventies, when he was taking classes at the San Francisco Art Institute.

It seems fitting that the debut exhibit happen this year, the 100-year anniversary of his birth. The six works on display at the Consumnes River College Art Gallery are depicted below. But to be truly appreciated, these large canvasses should be seen in person. Many in attendance at the reception remarked that while they'd seen the photographs, they weren't prepared for how vivid, vibrant and relevant these works are. All the more impressive considering they were painted close to sixty years ago and have never before been shown publicly.

Heartfelt thanks to curator Yoshio Taylor for a beautifully conceived and mounted exhibit, to Consumnes River College which had the vision to build a remarkable gallery, and to the many family and friends who attended on February 24 and will visit the gallery in the weeks to come.

Below are photographs from the opening reception at the gallery, as well as a "pre-reception" gathering at my home, where, among other things, the infamous "Green Man" (Joe Rice self portrait from the early sixties) and other art work is featured in a number of photos.

    The Green Man
    Joe Rice remembered

Rice was a little-known artist. By choice.
The Green Man is a self-portrait  from the 1960s. It's a pretty good likeness. Rice was an artist first, a father, teacher and whatever else, after that. He was also inventive, dogged, abidingly humble, and, in his own quiet way, an inspiration to those who knew him.

    Dorothy Rice writes things
. Her first book, The Reluctant Artist: Joe Rice (1918-2011) is an art book/memoir about her father, Joe Rice, whose lifelong dedication to his art, with no interest in finding an audience, both inspires and mystifies. Visit her author website here.
