Sacramento Poetry Center - January 13 Joe Rice Art Reception - January 22, Reading & Discussion from THE RELUCTANT ARTIST (& maybe some new stuff!)

12/27/2023

There are two upcoming events to celebrate the work of an unknown artist, Joe Rice, my Dad, Joseph Flavius Rice. He would have been 105 this past December 24.

January 13 from 5-7 p.m — a Second Saturday Reception in the Poetry Center Gallery

Monday, January 22, 7:30 p.m — a Reading & Discussion of THE RELUCTANT ARTIST by Dorothy Rice (that's me, the artist's daughter)

Some of you may remember that way back in early 2016 when THE RELUCTANT ARTIST was first published, I had a reading at the Sacramento Poetry Center, along with a slide show. For this reason, and many others, I am especially grateful that this opportunity to once again showcase my father's work at the Poetry Center arose. It also presents an opportunity to display a number of smaller canvasses that haven't been publicly shown before.

I am particularly thankful for Jennifer Tachera, longtime friend and artistic mentor, who always keeps an eye out for opportunities like this, and to Patrick Grizzell, Board of Directors President, for being so inviting and interested in my father's art work, and in my writing. I am humbled and touched. Of course, bountiful buckets of thanks for Jan Haag, without whom I wouldn't have known about the Poetry Center in the first place or had the opportunity for that initial reading of THE RELUCTANT ARTIST (for which, if I recall, she even cancelled her "write" that Friday evening).

All to say, as I sit in a Pelham, New York, coffee shop typing this missive, my heart is full of thanks for the many friends I have made over the years through our shared love of all things creative. I hope to see many of you in January.

Look for more information on The Poetry Center website in the coming days!

    The Green Man
    Joe Rice remembered

Rice was a little-known artist. By choice.
The Green Man is a self-portrait  from the 1960s. It's a pretty good likeness. Rice was an artist first, a father, teacher and whatever else, after that. He was also inventive, dogged, abidingly humble, and, in his own quiet way, an inspiration to those who knew him.

    Dorothy Rice writes things
. Her first book, The Reluctant Artist: Joe Rice (1918-2011) is an art book/memoir about her father, Joe Rice, whose lifelong dedication to his art, with no interest in finding an audience, both inspires and mystifies. Visit her author website here.
